Dream High

Hey Everyone!

Wow, I just finished the most tear-jerking yet heart felt drama called Dream High. It was a very inspirational drama about 6 kids and their journey to make it in the entertainment business. Indeed, this topic has been covered many times, but this time, it wasn't your typical coverage of one couple, and their struggles. It actually showed what the business does in a very serious light. The 6 kids were Go Hye Mi, Song Sam Dong, Hyun Shi Hyuk, Yoon Baek Hee, Jason, and Kim Pil Sook. The main character seemed to be HM from the start, but in reality it turned out that all 6 characters got some coverage, and they showed how each of them matured through the complexity of each character. I admit, PS and J were a bit on the simple side, but they did face the issues of over-weight kids and how the business treats them (PS), as well as losing motivation (J). Their little love story was cute and they both matured well by realizing their dreams and not just making it about their relationship. The real drama was with HM, SD, SH, and BH. HM and BH were good friends, until having to enter Kirin Highschool, where their real rivalry began from the interview. HM was always very ignorant and treated her friends badly (including her bestfriend BH). BH though, trying to compete with HM, became monstrous, and did things she normally would not do, because of the pressure of the industry. Things from putting a tack in a friend's shoe to get a position, to throwing a flower pot on someone because they were getting ahead, all the way to the time she was sexually harassed because of her desperation to stay in the industry. Her character showed that it is really tough in this business, and that hard work does not always necessarily mean you will make it. But later, she does reconcile with HM and becomes a teacher at Kirin Highschool. Now, the love triangle between HM, SD, and SH. HM and SH knew eachother long ago in their childhood, whereas HM met SD in his hometown and tried to bring him to Seoul so that she can enroll in Kirin. Though SH liked HM from the start, so did SD. SD fell in love with HM at first sight, and though he knew she did not like him, he pursued her till the end. Personally, I love the underdog winning in the love triangles, but it does not occur that often. But lucky for me, this one did (sort of!). HM does pick SD in the end, but lets him go fulfill his dream in the U.S. as a soloist, who does make it big at the Grammy's. However, their love triangle was not that important to me really. Yes, true, I really wanted HM to pick SD, but the reasons why are more important than them actually getting together. First off, to speak of SH, he liked HM, but he was away a lot because he debuted in a group early. His main issue in the drama was that he was an illegitimate child of his father, and was always in hiding. The only way he could come out of it, was if he joined a band. But, this cost him HM, pretty much! He was always away, and though HM didn't realize her feelings for SD right away, SD was there for her while SH was away for long periods at a time. I admit, usually the first kiss wins (SH on a ferris wheel), but luckily again like I Really Really Like You, the underdog won! Either ways, SH faced the issue of BH getting sexually assaulted, and tried to protect her, but in the end BH realized she had to come forward. With that issue, SH and his father became close again, and so he was fine. But he realized that HM had fallen for SD. Now, SD and HM met first in the countryside, where SD fell for her at first sight! Though she only had ill intention in bringing him to Seoul (so she could stay in the school), in the end, they became really close friends. SD always protected HM and tried his best to understand her. Everyone knew SD liked HM, but HM never really gave in. But in the end is when she finally realized what he meant to her. He protected her from the flower pot and almost got brain damage, he fixed up graffiti, so that she could feel better from the bullying at school, and even went out of his way to read manhwas that she mentioned, to better understand her. He was always there for her. But unfortunately, he had an illness, that began to sprout, in which he would have random deafness. It is an illness that is very rare (irrelevant to the flower pot incidence, thank goodness!), and though he was an amazing singer and composer, this was a major set back! The calm and innocent SD, became really down and depressed after knowing of this (of course, it didn't help that he just saw SH and HM kissing on the ferris wheel that was in front of the restaurant he was supposed to take her to!). Anyways, HM helped him through that terrible time of his life, and he in the end, became really famous, though went to be very bright and lonesome. HM on the other hand, was originally an opera singer, but through her struggles at Kirin, she learned to change her stubborn self, and learned to protect her friends, instead of other selfishness. She matured a lot in the drama, and chose the guy wisely! Though I liked SH, I really thought SD was better for her because he was always protecting her, even knowing she liked someone else. I admit, it reminded me of I Really Really Like You, a lot. Anyways, though she did pick SD and they did have a kiss, but she let him go to the U.S. to pursue his dream of becoming world famous (which he did). All in all, there were great character development in this drama. Though, I wish it was a better ending for SD and HM, it was happy in the sense that they both realized their dreams, and still loved eachother (since he kept the K-necklace that she gave him, and she still had the charm he gave back to her - also sang the same song for him that she sang at the beginning when the first met). I really liked this drama because it kept me hooked to see how each character would develop. I finally feel like I watched a more serious drama, and it was a nice change, since it showed very complex characters. I cried a lot for this drama! Especially for SD. I could feel the internal struggles he had, and the actor did a wonderful job in portraying that SD's character! Personally, I wasn't that big of a fan of HM, I liked PS more hehe. She was cute and funny, but also told J like it was to motivate him! All the characters were good, but I admit, my favourite overall was SD, because of his journey from being a country-bumpkin, to becoming world renowned, even with his hearing problem. I thought that was amazing courage. Anyways, before I continue on and on, I give this drama a 5 out of 5 stars, because overall, it was an enjoyable drama with laughs and tears!

I'm off,

- B
